Mile 13 found me at Hains Point. It was great to be halfway done–and even better to be close to the end of the loneliest point of the race. I could see the runners ahead of me heading towards the National Mall!
The 33rd Marine Corps Marathon (”The People’s Marathon”) took place on Sunday, October 26, 2008. I went to the Health & Fitness Expo at the DC Armory on Friday (after running a red light on the way there–while I was wearing my National Park Service Volunteer uniform..OOPS!) and got my race bib, shirt, goodie bag, and all kinds of cool free stuff. I also bought a pint glass with the race logo on it. Saturday we had our TNT Pasta Party, which as always was very inspirational and motivating. After that it was back home to watch Penn State beat Ohio State, and then to bed to rest before the big day!
I’m officially a Marine Corps Marathoner! That brings my 12-month race total to 1 10K, 2 full marathons, 1 5K, 1 8K, and 1 half marathon.
No wonder I’m tired!! Preliminary race report will be posted tonight, with full report to follow whenever I wake up.
Well my bib is pinned on my singlet, everything is laid out for the morning, my timing tag is on my shoe, and I’ve packed and repacked my gear check bag 4 times. I’m heading to bed and ready to run.
If you have nothing to do tomorrow and want to track me, my bib number is 26988 and you can follow me online at http://www.marinemarathon.com. There’s also a way to set up text or e-mail messaging if you REALLY need to know how I’m doing while you’re away from the computer.
Will have a preliminary race report tomorrow–weather looks perfect and I’m excited!
Oh yes, we are fully into Taper Madness, my friends! It’s so bad that I almost didn’t write this blog entry, for fear that the mere mention of these things will render me completely unable to even toe the starting line, let alone cross the finish line! I can’t concentrate on a lot of things (such as the article I’m supposed to be writing about Survivor right now), I go back and forth between being SUPER excited for race day and just wanting it to be over already, and let’s not even get started on the various aches, pains, and other health problems that have crossed through my mind this past week.
Yeah, I should have updated long before now. But you all understand, I’m currently smack in the middle of Taper Madness.
Today we had our 20-mile training run, which is the longest run before the marathon. Normally that run takes place 3 weeks before the race, and then we enter our taper period (affectionately referred to as “taper madness”) where we run shorter distances until the race, to help our legs get rested and strong for race day. However, since we are training with some people who are running the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco, and that race is one week before the Marine Corps Marathon, we ran it 4 weeks before the race. It’s a huge logistical undertaking to get all 3 teams (MD, DC, and VA) together and set up water stops, post-race pizza, etc., so they do it all at once whenever possible. I’m glad we did it that way, because I’m going up to NJ next weekend.
Hey everyone! One of my Best Running Friends (BRFs), Betsy, is running the Quad Cities Marathon tomorrow morning. If it wasn’t for Betsy, I never would have kept running, and certainly wouldn’t have completed two half marathons and one full in the past 13 months! So, put your hands together and give her a cheer!!
Saturday was supposed to be our break between the 18- and 20-mile runs. We were running “only” 10 miles and we were at Lake Needwood, which is not only one of my favorite trails, but is also only a few minutes from home. It’s the only trail that doesn’t require me to go on the highway and I love the extra sleep I can get when we’re there. Also apparently on my side Saturday was the temperature. It was in the low 50s when we started running, and I happily put my capris and short-sleeved running shirt on and headed out to the trail.
